Giving Back

Being able to give back to the community is an honor. It displays a humbled gratitude to those who’ve helped you in your time of need. Pay it forward opportunities surround us every day, it’s up to us to act upon them. Here is my story...

On January 3, 2012, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer that ultimately resulted in my need of a bone marrow transplant. The procedure was performed at OHSU (Oregon Health Science University) in my hometown of Portland Oregon. I was very fortunate an anonymous perfect match donor was willing to come to my aide through the help and services of Be The Match. To this day, I am happy to say, I am a cancer survivor. This treatment excludes me from donating blood or being on the bone marrow registry but I knew there must be other opportunities to pay it forward. In 2015, the desire prompted me to apply as a Be The Match Ambassador, the first BMT ambassador to serve at OHSU. After some formal training, I am currently a diligent Be The Match and OHSU Oncology volunteer for caregivers, patients and the OHSU staff.

Shelly Miller, Owner/Operator

In October of 2016, I created a new tour company called Guide Me Oregon.

I felt my purpose was to do more. So, Guide Me Oregon developed a special way to give back to OHSU and bring attention to the Be The Match registry. More directly, a special benefit to the transplant recipient families. This was a win for everyone. Most families at transplant centers must uproot from their family and friends and relocate for an unknown amount of time to have a bone marrow transplant. It can be terrifying. Even though I have never met these families before, I know their stresses, fears, chaos and uncertainty. Our personal experience connects us.

Here’s where Guide Me Oregon shines.

Through a thorough selection process, OHSU will choose a family to go with Guide Me Oregon on a private exclusive tour. Guide Me Oregon will donate the time to take a bone marrow transplant family to explore Oregon’s beauty for the day. Our goal is to give them a memorable day from a stressful environment and leave them with a positive Oregon experience.

Giving back has come full circle.

Guide Me Oregon does not accept payment from our OHSU guests. However, if guests would still like to give, all I ask is they pay it forward to Be The Match. Their tax-deductible gift means more patients will receive a marrow transplant—and get a second chance at life. Please follow this link to donate your generous contribution. If you would like to volunteer or be on the Marrow Registry, I’m happy to help. A few minutes of your time, a mailed simple cheek swab from your home and you could be the cure. Please consider joining the Be The Match Registry today.

I’m continuously grateful for the opportunity to serve my community. Pay it forward opportunities surround us every day, it’s up to us to act upon them.

All my best,

Shelly
